Hot Stamping Foil Ghosting Problem on License Plates – Causes and Solutions

Problem Description

One of our customers experienced a common issue in license plate hot stamping: foil dragging, where the hot stamping foil leaves unwanted marks on non-stamped areas of the base film, affecting product appearance and quality.

The license plate bears extraneous scuff marks.

Solutions

  1. Adjust Rubber Roller Gap and Pressure
Ensure the roller gap and pressure are properly set according to machine standards to avoid unintended foil contact.
  • Recalibrate roller distance and pressure
  • Standardize temperature, dwell time, and feed tension
  • Perform first-article inspection before full production
  1. Ensure Plate Flatness
Prevent uneven contact caused by warped or non-flat license plates.
  • Inspect and sort plates based on flatness
  • Apply flattening processes if necessary
  • Optimize fixtures or support to improve contact consistency
